DRUM REPLACEMENT

Worn or Cracked Cable Drums — Replaced With Heavy-Duty Cast Aluminum

Cable drums sit at each end of the torsion spring shaft and wind up the cables that lift your door. They wear, crack, or get grooves cut into them by frayed cables — and once a drum is compromised, the cable will eventually unwind from it and your door will jam or fall.

When drums need replacing

  • Cable groove visibly worn into the drum face
  • Hairline crack in the drum (common in cheap cast drums after 10+ years)
  • Drum slipping on the shaft — set screws stripped
  • Cable repeatedly comes off the drum
  • One drum is older than the other — drums should always match

Why drums always replace in pairs

Drums must match exactly — same diameter, same cable groove pitch, same shaft bore. A mismatched pair will lift the door unevenly. Even if only one drum is failing, we replace both. The cost difference is small and the door will balance properly for years.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before booking a service.

How much does drum replacement cost?

$220–$380 for both drums, including new cables (because we always replace cables when we touch drums).

How long does it take?

About 90 minutes. We unwind the springs, swap drums, run new cables, re-tension springs, and balance the door.
